CBB Picks: Take Temple, Purdue as Home Favorites on Tuesday

Temple basketball put itself in the spotlight on Friday with a win over Villanova.

But that was just one win. Now the Owls have to prove they can put together a sustained run in nonconference play.

Aaron McKie's team has a chance to pick up a rare win over a SEC team, as Vanderbilt comes to the Liacouras Center on Tuesday night.

Temple is one of a few favorites on the board that sit in favorable home spots. I know betting all favorites is not fun sometimes, but that's how you have to make money in the part of the college basketball season.

Vanderbilt at Temple (-3.5) (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+)

Alright, Temple, show us what you got.

The Owls earned a huge win over Villanova on Friday and now they have to avoid a let down against a power-five opponent in Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt struggled in losses to Memphis and Southern Miss, both of which occurred at home in Nashville.

Vandy's early-season metrics are not great. The Commodores are 339th in free-throw shooting, 285th in effective field-goal percentage, 260th in two-point offense and 262nd in three-point offense.

Temple has found a groove on offense with a healthy Khalif Battle leading the charge and it has the better overall talent compared to Vanderbilt.

Stony Brook at Rhode Island (-12) (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+)

Rhode Island is off to a brutal start under Archie Miller, but some relief is in sight in the form of Stony Brook.

Stony Brook scored just 45 points in a blowout loss to Florida to open the season. The Seawolves are the perfect foe for Rhode Island to bounce back against.

The Rams' biggest edge could be on the boards. Rhode Island ranks 28th in offensive rebounding and Stony Brook is 354th. Rhode Island won the rebounding battle in both of its losses, while Stony Brook lost the rebounding battle 44-28 to Florida.

USC Upstate at Clemson (-21) (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+)

USC Upstate managed to score just 38 points against Duke in its last game.

Clemson's defense ranks 57th in adjusted efficiency and 12th in two-point defense.

The Tigers should flex the difference between a power-five program and a low-tier mid-major, and it also helps that they have extra motivation coming off a loss against South Carolina.

St. Bonaventure vs. South Dakota State (-7) (8 p.m. ET, ESPN+)

This is a neutral site game on paper, but it is being played at the Sanford Pentagon in South Dakota.

South Dakota State is already battle tested from an overtime loss to Akron and a road win over Boise State.

The Jackrabbits have an edge over St. Bonaventure in experience as well. They are loaded with upperclassmen, while the Bonnies have a ton of youth and they could be their downfall in what is more of a South Dakota State home game than a neutral site contest.

Marquette at Purdue (-8) (8:30 p.m. ET, FS1)

Purdue's defense is the key to this bet.

The Boilermakers held their last two opponents under 55 points. They rank in the top 40 in four different defensive categories.

Purdue holds the edge in the paint with Zach Edey and Mason Gillis. Marquette is 259th in two-point defense on KenPom.

Matt Painter's team can establish its dominance down low and hit a few shots to create an advantage early and take Marquette out of the game in a tough road environment.
