This one stings. We're saying goodbye to yet another major piece of Philly concert history...the iconic tower sign on top of Upper Darby's historic Tower Theater is coming down.
It’s comes down to being a safety issue, as the 92 year old 16 ton steel structure is badly deteriorating.
Upper Darby's Mayor Tom Micozzie was concerned when he was first approached about permits to facilitate the removal because it "has become a landmark for 69th Street, however, an independent analysis by the township’s engineers confirmed that severe deterioration of the metal base and structure could not be corrected and posed a hazard to public safety.”
Live Nation, who owns Tower Theater, says the sphere from the top of the tower and letters from its sides will be donated a museum and options for the tower’s replacement were being explored.
