Bakar has dropped his highly anticipated debut album Nobody’s Home via Black Butter. Produced by long-time collaborator Zach Nahomealongside contributions from SebastiAn and Matthew Tavares, the 14-track album also features guest appearances from Celeste (on "Gotham") and Maverick Sabre (on "Reclaim!").
Nobody’s Home explores Bakar's newfound connection to his own heritage, his Islamic faith, and a notion of the "Future Immigrant". Informed by his own first-generation experiences in the UK, Bakar hopes that he and his work can serve as "an alternative for the Black kids who don't fit in.” Building on the acclaim that surrounded his 2018 debut mixtape BadKid, the initial foundation of the album was conceived in a small production studio in 2019. However, the majority was recorded in London's Metropolis Studios during an "intense but magical" ten-day stint the following year. Due to restrictions, most of the sessions were limited to only Bakar, Zach and engineer Liam Nolan, pushing him to look more internally than ever. As a result, Nobody’s Home is filled with more emotion, expansiveness, and ambition than anything Bakar has done before.
“So much magic is happening at one moment it can be overwhelming,” recalls Bakar. “In those moments I feel invincible. Like I can get off anything, I can make anything and I’m gonna get off my ideas. It’s a really enjoyable place to be. Once you get into that zone.”
In addition to the standard formats, Bakar collaborated with iconic clothing brand Stussy on a special vinyl format. For full details and to order the special-edition album, head HERE.
“I had moved to Hampstead, a nicer area. I had gone from the bottom of the hill in Camden, Chalk Farm, to being at the top of the hill. That’s a crazy thing to do from where I’m from. I guess the whole concept is me saying to a girl, ‘I think I’ve found the spot. There’s a whole new world up here, the top of the hill it looks different. Come see it.’”
