If you wish to properly celebrate Saint Patrick's Day during Lent , you are now permitted to do so, thanks to the Philadelphia Archdiocese. Corned beef is a Saint Patrick's Day tradition, but the holiday falls on a Friday and Catholics are supposed to abstain from meat on Fridays. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has granted an exception for this Friday, so corned beef is literally back on the table. The Archdiocese is asking Catholic to observe another penance if they choose to eat corned beef. Archbishop Nelson Pérez urged Catholics who choose to indulge in the St. Patrick's Day staple to adopt another penance of their choice instead.
